It’s about time I mentioned one of the best new(ish) podcasts around: the Blue Box Podcast. The owners of the catchiest opening catchphrase on iTunes: “Talking about Doctor Who so that you don’t have to”. I’ve been following them from Day One when they started out promisingly and they haven’t looked back.
JR, Lee, Mark and Simon have managed to bravely steer their fragile four-man craft down the rapids of podcasting without hitting the deadly rocks of fandom cliché and bumptious self-regard which have wrecked many a careless podcasting canoeist. After three months, they’ve managed to avoid the menacing yet tempting wooded shores of narcissism and have left far behind the strains of Duelling Banjos mixed with the terrified piggy squeals of less fortunate podcasters being rogered from the rear by those dread cyber-hillbillies, mediocrity and conformity.
They’ve managed to achieve a very easy and natural conversational style and tone which is not too artificially a public performance and yet not too cliquey to exclude the listener. They’re talking to each other rather than at each other and the listener, never competing to put on the quirkiest performance. In three months, not one of them has put on the voice of the Comic Book Store guy from The Simpsons to dismiss the opinions of other people. Best of all, for those of us of a certain age, there’s now actually a podcast out there featuring someone who hit puberty before Castrovalva.
The Blue Box Podcast has passed the “Top 5 Reasons to Unsubscribe” test with flying colours to become another in that select group of dear diary downloads.
